| The decision on the 29th Feb 2000 by the 34-strong Link group
of banks and building societies to charge up to £2.50 for cash machine
withdrawals, effective January 1, 2001, was originally instigated by Barclays
Bank Plc,. who have been campaigning since last September to introduce these
punitive charges.
Should these
charges come into force, it will be the biggest Rip-Off ever perpetrated by
British banks against the British consumer in recent history - and is clearly
nothing more than blatant profiteering. The Office of Fair Trading has stated
that if they do make a charge it should be no more than 29 pence!!
Banks in the UK
already earn £180,000,000 in cash card machine charges - and are expected
to make an overall profit of £20,000,000,000 (that's right - £20
billion!!) this year from their 'usual' trading!! Yet, they're still reducing
staff and closing branches! British Banks are already clearly the most
profitable financial organisations in Europe - if not the World!!! (see:
